Varadero is the largest resorts complex in the Caribbean, national tourists started to coming here in 1872, but the international development didn't begin until 1930's when the US chemical millionaire Irenee Dupont Nemours built a large estate on the peninsula. Nowadays most tourists come from Canada and Europe. The peninsula has over 22 km of white sandy beaches, and is like heaven for sun worshipping people.
This former elitist resort, 34 km east of Matanzas and 140 km east of Havana, is fronted by a stunning white sandy beach which, is bathed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. Flocks of egrets and occasional pelicans fly by, skimming over a sea of stunning blue. The resort occupies a narrow peninsula centered on a Cuban town, has a small population.  There are lots of exiting tours and sightseeing's. Josone Park, in the center of Varadero, is a nature area with restaurants and cultural events which can be toured by horse and carriage from resort hotels. There is also a dolphin aquarium with shows. Evening entertainment at the hotels is high quality, with plenty of traditional Cuban music and dancing. Among excursions from Varadero are a Jungle Tour on jet skis through the waterways, a submarine trip to the offshore reefs, a boat trip on the Canimar River, helicopter trip to the Yumuri Valley and the nearby Bellamar Caves. Amongst these are the Cueva de San Ambrosio, with its cave art; the Cuevas de Musulmanes. The Varadero region offers visitors a wide range of choices: ecotourism, scuba diving, fishing, birds watching, cultural tourism. Take a daytrip to Havana, just over 2 hours away by road, is a must. Visit Yumuri Valley, this is most impressive valley in Cuba, surpassed only by Vinales, located at the east of the Havana-Matanzas mountain 8 km in diameter. Bellamar Cave, located at the exit of Matanzas city, is considered to be one of the wonders of Cuban geography. Famous for its karstic crystals, stalactites and stalagmites. Explored area of the cave is 3 km long, while its deepest part descends to 48 meters. Daytrip flights also operate to Trinidad. Unesco World Heritage Site on the south coast with perfectly preserved colonial houses and streets.  Strictly speaking, Varadero is the name of the beach area. It lies on the north, ocean-facing side of a 20 km-long peninsula called Punta Hicacos actually a slender island, which encloses Cardenas Bay and is separated from the mainland by a hairline inlet, Laguna de Paso Malo. The peninsula is only 1.2 km at its widest point. It slopes to the northeast, where its tip "Hicacos Pointis" the northernmost point of Cuba. Varadero beach is virtually unbroken 12 km long swath that widens and improves eastward then breaks up into smaller beaches. There are lots of natural wonders to explore; one of them is 500 years old Cactus Patriarch  Varadero's most exiting tour, full-day, half-day or sunset sail cruises from Chapelin Marina, located almost at the end of the peninsula, take a one day trip on modern catamaran to magnificent Cayo Blanco.
